Onondaga Viburnum, viburnum sargentii 'Onondaga', has young velvety foliage that is dark maroon, maturing to deep green with a purple tinge. The creamy white flat-topped flowers are 5" across with maroon centers. It produces sparse small red fruits. It makes a great screen or shrub border plant. This multistemmed shrub reaching 6 feet tall and is as wide. It requires full sun to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun. It requires more watering than most viburnum. Onondaga is an excellent multi-season interest flowering shrub. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Viburnum are one of the most outstanding group of shrubs for use in the landscape planting because they are hardy and resistant to serious pests.

The Common Snowball Bush, Viburnum opulus, also called the European Cranberry bush produces white flowers in late spring. It is a deciduous thicket-forming Old World shrub. In the fall, the leaves turn a wonderful burgundy reddish-purple. About the same time, the bright red, attractive berries ripen, and persist on the plant throughout the winter. Birds, particularly Cedar Waxwings, are very fond of the berries, and can often be found snacking during the winter. Have a snowball fight in June! Kids and adults alike love this rounded plant with masses of flowers. Grows best in full sun to partial shade.

The Compact American Cranberrybush, Viburnum trilobum 'Alfredo', is native, hardy plant and has edible red fruits in fall, which are great for making jellies (and of course, for birds, too). It has superb red orange fall color.This compact American Cranberrybush grows rounded and upright, to about 5 to 6 feet high.

American Cranberrybush, viburnum trilobum, is a large, attractive and hardy shrub with big white flower clusters in late May, and then produces abundant scarlet berries in fall. The berries hang on into winter and provide food for birds. Dark green foliage develops an outstanding red fall color. Does best on well-drained sites with better than average moisture. Cranberrybush Viburnum prefers a rich soil with ample moisture. It does well in full sun or shade and can become leggy and requires occasional renewal pruning to keep it in good form. It grows 10-12 feet tall and as wide and makes an excellent deciduous shrub for screening.

Nannyberry Viburnum, viburnum lentago, is a hardy, upright growing shrub with glossy green foliage that turns red-purple in fall. The creamy white flat-topped flower clusters mature into small blue-black fruit, which provide winter food for birds. Due to its mild suckering, it becomes more open at maturity, with arching branches. Nannyberry is a large tree-like "leggy" native shrub that can be pruned into a small tree form. This shrub is good for farmstead windbreaks or a screen plant with year-round interest. It prefers rich loam to clay loam soil with ample moisture. This shrub does well in either full sun or shade and is one of the more tolerant woody plants in shady sites. It grows 20 feet tall and 6-10 or more feet wide. Pruning is required to remove suckers if a tree form is desired. Viburnum tend to be multi-season plants with ornamental value throughout a large part of the season.

White flowers appear in mid May, followed by persistent bright red fruit. The fall color is a stunning brilliant red with a very impressive berry display. It requires full sun to partial shade; moist, well-drained soil is best, but is tolerant of wet soils; also tolerant of alkaline soils. This upright, round shaped shrub grows 8-10 feet tall and 6-8 wide. Redwing offers something of interest all year and its dense foliage makes a nice hedge. It is an excellent plant for screening and informal hedging. What a great flower, fruit, and foliage! This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds.

Wentworth American Cranberrybush, viburnum trilobum 'Wentworth', is a heavy fruiting, upright form of American Viburnum with white flowers in the spring, and then producing large red fruits that are excellent tasting and good for making preserves. Its dark green foliage turns a beautiful red in autumn. This cranberrybush is rounded in form, fairly dense and grows 10-12 feet tall and as wide. It is an excellent choice for screening, informal hedging, small masses, and borders. It requires part shade to full sun and prefers sandy loam to some clay, but does best on well-drained sites with better than average moisture.
