	Balsam Fir Description: The Balsam Fir, 'Abies balsamea', exhibits a relatively dense, dark-green, pyramidal crown with a slender spire-like tip. The scientific name "balsamea" is an ancient word for the balsam tree, so named because of the many resinous blisters found in the bark. Balsam fir and Fraser fir have many similar characteristics.The species thrives in cooler climates and demands abundant soil moisture and a humid atmosphere. 	Bristlecone Pine Description: The Bristlecone Pine, 'Pinus aristata', is a type of pine tree that can reach an age far greater than that of any other living thing known - up to 5,000 years.It is dense in growth, the shoots set with dark, short needles, five per bundle. The cones which occasion its names are indeed tipped by slender spines or bristles. Looks aside, bristlecone pine is famous because in its arid mountain home of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, it can live for thousands of years. 	Flame Willow Description: The Flame Willow, 'Salix Willow', gets it's name from the stems that turn red in late fall and lasts until early spring. It grows multistemmed, more like a shrub, unless trained otherwise.The Flame willow is very hardy and responds well to pruning. Plant these as specimens or in a line along a border. 	Korean Evodia Description: The Korean Evodia, 'Evodia daniellii' is one of the few flowering trees that flower in the summer, rather than spring. White flowers are borne in mid summer and are quite showy. Fruit remains during the winter and adds interest to an uninteresting time of year. This plant appears to do better in good soils and seems somewhat intolerant of impoverished soils. This plant's small size will allow it to be used in restricted spaces, keeping in mind that it is as wide as tall. It is a good honey plant and the foliage looks good all summer. 	Prairie Gold Aspen Description: The Prairie Gold Quaking Aspen, 'Populus tremuloides �Prairie Gold�, is a fast-growing tree that grows in everything from moist sandy soil to shallow rocky soils and clay. It has attractive cream-colored bark, beautiful silvery catkins in early spring, and lustrous dark green leaves that flutter in the slightest breeze, finally turning yellow in fall.
